Recently, I visited a horse that was easily startl

Recently, I visited a horse that was easily startled and constantly focused on the herd. But through grounding and groundwork, horse and owner found each other. And when it happened, we could all feel it. The key was tempo – there was simply way too much speed in all activity 🏃‍♀️

I still remember the first time I witnessed a moment like that. I was a fairly “green” instructor, and the plan was to do groundwork and practice handling due to some challenges. But the horse had a different idea, and it showed us exactly what needed to happen for their partnership to truly work. We walked into the arena, but instead of following the owner in the first exercise, the horse stood completely still, right in front of her. I was very curious about that reaction and asked the owner to go along with what the horse was suggesting. So there they stood. Face to face, about 40–50 cm apart. The owner instinctively closed her eyes. The horse stood with half-closed eyes and softly moving the lips. And there was no doubt at all – they were 100% connected. It was an incredibly moving and beautiful moment that just went on and on. I didn’t look at my watch, but they probably stood like that for 15–20 minutes. Maybe more. No words. No movement. Just tears slowly rolling down the owner’s cheeks. Both the owners friend who was present and I also had misty eyes 🥹

I’ve witnessed many such moments since then. When owners learn to pause and just be. When they – sometimes for the very first time – truly feel their horse. And in many cases, feel themselves for the first time in a long while. When time stands still, and horse and human begin laying a new foundation for their life together.

Many people reach out to me saying they’re on the verge of giving up. But when they experience the effect of simply being – of not rushing all the time – hope returns.

You can’t help but feel grateful to these wonderful horses who show us the way to this beautiful presence.

Sunday Gratitude – Mother’s Day Edition 🌸
In honor of Mother’s Day, today’s post is about a mother-son bond between horses – Braveheart and his mom, Zizi.
Zizi came back into Braveheart’s life in February last year. They had been apart for nearly 7.5 years. He wasn’t even six months old when they were separated, and I’ve always felt it left a mark on him.

They were so happy to see each other again. It was as if a wave of relief swept across the pasture as they trotted around in perfect sync. It was beautiful and touching 🥹💞

In nature, foals aren’t taken from their mothers at six months. Young horses leave home gradually around 1.5–2 years old – after having time to play, learn, and gather life experience within the family group. (If you’re curious to learn more about this, I recommend following @applied_herd_behavior )

I know a lot about Braveheart’s early life and understand why some things have been hard for him. Social connection is a basic need for horses – and Braveheart had to say goodbye to his mom early, with many changes in his herd during his first years too. I’ve always seen how hard he tries to connect with others. He’s drawn to every horse – both at home and when we’re out. Sadly, there have been periods where, due to unfortunate circumstances, he was alone. But now, thankfully, he has his mom and a few friends to share life with 🐴❤️

I’m deeply grateful that Braveheart has had the chance to be with his mother again. Of course, a nine-year-old wouldn’t live with his mom like this in the wild. But life in fences is far from nature – and for Braveheart and Zizi, being together just works.

I’m so thankful that Zizi came back into Braveheart’s life – and into mine. She has a beautiful soul that touches your heart 🌟💗

When the heart speaks�❤️
I clearly remember my very first riding lesson. The horse I was going to ride, Robin – maybe you've heard me mention him – was beautiful. I fell for him instantly. But during that first meeting, and the ones after, something puzzled me: I couldn’t feel him.
I was used to being around dogs and always felt a connection to animals. But not with Robin. Not at first.
We’re all capable of sensing others – humans and animals alike. It's about energy. That invisible communication between living beings that starts in the heart.
Research from the HeartMath Institute shows that the heart generates the most powerful electromagnetic field in the body. This field can be measured several feet away and carries information about our emotional state. When we are in heart coherence, our heart sends a more harmonious signal that can influence those around us.
So the heart doesn't just pump blood. It communicates. And when we're present and balanced, that heart field can create safety and connection – even with horses.

Robin hadn’t felt seen or heard for years. Most of his social contact was with humans. His only social contact with horses was through bars in the stable wall, an occasional turnout with one horse in the arena and a month will all school horses in a summer pasture. Only brief moments of freedom. He had shut down. That’s why I couldn’t feel him.
But that experience changed everything. It sparked my curiosity and passion for understanding horses. When the riding school let me buy him, my learning began. Robin taught me to feel horses. Feel their energy.
His way was to run – to run from his past. And he ran fast! I learned to sense when the energy got too big to hold. It saved me from many wild rides.
I’m deeply grateful for all he taught me. He let me into his heart – and taught me a way to communicate with horses, which I now pass on to others.

When Treats Reward the Wrong Behavior🫣

The other day, I was called out to a young horse with handling issues. The owner had already come a long way in just a few months, but challenges remained.

It’s not unusual for horses to be unsettled after a move — some take 6–12 months to truly relax. But in this case, it wasn’t just the relocation. The horse had clearly learned some unhelpful things, both through management and training. Treats had been used constantly at former owners place — not to reward desired behavior, but simply all the time, even during unwanted behavior.

So the horse had been rewarded for taking charge and reacting strongly. That made it quick to explode under even small amounts of pressure. Even though things had improved before my visit, it was still reactive. We worked on a different way of handling — and already that day, we saw a shift.

While I was there, someone from the stable asked for advice. She’d gotten scared when the young horse acted aggressively while she tried to fetch her own horse from the field — even kicking out at her. And I completely understand her fear.

But there’s no quick fix. I could suggest a mindset shift (young horses don’t respond well to fear or tension) and a different way of leading. But beyond that, it’s about training — retraining, really, after a pattern of unfortunate learning.

We’re working with living beings. Flight animals with instincts shaped over thousands of years. Change takes time and patience. I wish I could offer instant solutions, but it doesn’t work like that. And even with progress, old patterns will show up — especially when reactive behavior has been rewarded with treats.

The next step is to keep practicing the new approach — and introduce learning through play. In small doses, so the horse stays calm. It needs to feel that being relaxed is the best thing in the world.

I also spoke with the stable owner about what had happened and what’s next. It’s vital that everyone around the horse understands what’s going on. That’s how real change happens.

Eight months ago – almost to the day – a horse

Eight months ago – almost to the day – a horse owner reached out to me and asked if I could come for a visit. Her horse, a 15-year-old gelding she had known since he was very young, had suddenly started refusing touch on one of his shoulders. As in a big NO THANK YOU! And since he was normally a cuddly boy who loved being groomed by his owner, alarm bells naturally started ringing.

A few days later, when I visited them, she showed me his reaction – and he was really upset. He received one bodywork session, during which he released a lot of tension. Now, I’m usually the one saying there are no quick fixes – but after just that one session, his owner was able to groom and cuddle his shoulder again 👏 It was truly wonderful to witness the huge relief from both horse and owner 😍

As I found a few other issues, I came back – and since then, I’ve been visiting them once a month, so his body could get the help and maintenance bodywork he needed. When you visit a horse and its human family regularly like that, a bond forms. And very often, a deep trust and a close connection. Both between the horse and me – and between the horse’s humans and me. I sort of follow them through “thick and thin.”

That’s also why it hurts when I get the message that one of my four-legged clients is no longer here. And dear Speedy, whom I wrote about above, sadly had to cross the rainbow bridge suddenly and far too soon the other day 💔 It’s always hard – but I know this goodbye is especially painful for his humans.

I am so grateful that I got to know him and his wonderful humans. And with their kind permission, I’m sharing his photo here, so we can all send him off with love.
